Sonien as given name #ukraine

Herbert Lazerow

<My father, Saul... always said that his Jewish name is Sonien (pronounced SAWN-yen). I have never come across this name otherwise in my research. Has anyone ever heard this name before? ... >

Alexander Beider, in his "A Dictionary of Ashkenazic Given Names" (Avotaynu 2001) does not list that spelling. Names that sound close to Sonien include Simon or Shimon and its derivatives (one of the sons of Jacob and Leah), Shoneman and other variants of Sheynman (meaning handsome man, probably borrowed >from German), and variants of Shneyer (meaning senior, elder, or master, borrowed >from such Latin-derived words as French seigneur, Spanish senor).
