Re: which Mogilev do I want? #ukraine

The problem you have posed regarding which Mogilev is associated with
your family is a common problem that many Jewish genealogists struggle
with for many towns in Eastern Europe that have matching names. The
reference to Poltava gubernia (as you have noted) is a good indication
that you are on the right track.

Your best bet, at this point, is to collect as much information about
as many immigrant members of the family as possible. Look at siblings,
cousins, aunt and uncles. See if their records provide additional
clues (e.g., gubernia or nearby towns). If your family was associated
with a landsmanshaft in the USA, look at their membership's European

Search Yad Vashem's Shoah Names Database ( ) using the
family surname to identify which towns with which relatives may have
been associated.

While I would never discourage an membership, understand
that they have very little information >from Eastern Europe. Most of
the information >from Eastern Europe on Ancestry is taken (by
agreement) >from JewishGen and is free on both JewishGen and Ancestry
(without a paid membership).
