This is very interesting to me. My grandmother and mother would make a snack of grated turnip (or white radish) and onions, mix in a little salt and pepper and oil. Eat it on a cracker and it was pure delight. And, yes, the family was >from Ukraine.
As to the garlic clove rubbed on the heel of rye bread, well, sprinkle it with a touch of kosher salt and I was (and still am) in heaven.
No vampires in my house!!
