My guess would be Schmulian - there's a family of this name in
Scotland, but don't know where they came from. Also Schmulians on
JewishGen's Family Tree of the Jewish People.

Hello all: I've been researching the names of :
EFFMAN (Babrusk, Minsk, and Latvia. Also spelled EFMAN. I know this
family well, but recently, a great grandfather's name, which I never
heard before, came up as ZALEL SMAYOLIAN. His name was supposed to be
AARONE EFFMAN, HIS SON, NATHAN EFFMAN. SMAYOLIAN is listed on a
1913 ship manifest.
I can't find this name anywhere, not in Hebrew meanings, Jewish surnames,
etc. Is it possible it was misspelled at Immigration or a mistake of
someone else who slipped in by accident? Could it be for Margolin
or something similar? Thanks to all for any clues.
I'M RESEARCHING: EFFMAN/EFMAN; MARGOLIN; CIEBOWITZ (ALL on my paternal
grandmother's side.) BASS; ROTH; NOBIL; OSTROVE ON MY PATERNAL GRANDFATH
