Medicinal Cupping #ukraine
I always thought that cupping was a discredited medieval practice that
had fallen out of favour by the late 18th century. Although I knew it
had been practised by our ancestors in Eastern Europe less than 100
years ago (apparently the children dreaded wet bankes as it was a lot
more painful than dry bankes - see 'The Shtetl Book' (Diane & David
Riskies, Ktav Publishing 1979)), I thought it was no longer in vogue.
Then a Russian friend told me it had been used to treat her as
recently as the 1980s, and I saw Michael Palin undergoing it in (I
think) Ukraine in his BBC 'New Europe' travelogue in 2006. Here's an
article about Jewish Eastern European cupping
