WINTER family in Czortkow #ukraine

Fanny Winter <fannywintera@...> wrote that her father, Mordejai
WINTER KLEINER, son of Mendel WINTER and Hanna KLEINER, left Poland in 1936. She would like to know about the wife and daughter he left behind. Some suggestions: - Since Czortkow (now Chortkiv, Ukraine) was in Galicia until the end of World War I, you might also send an inquiry to the Gesher Galicia discussion group. To join it, go here: http://www.jewishgen.org/ListManager/members_add.asp - The town's yizkor (memorial) book (http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/chortkov/cho373.html) lists this mother and daughter: WINTER, Itta bat Reuven and her daughter Regina. You can't assume that they were Mordejai's wife and daughter, but that's possible. - Fanny, did your father immigrate to the United States? If so, a possible source of his first wife's name would be his passenger arrival record, which would have listed his closest relative in his place of origin. Many passenger manifests for this period are available on Ancestry.com. If you can't find him, you might want to order his naturalization record, which includes details that will make a search for the arrival record easier. - The records of the International Tracing Service include many inquiries about the fate of relatives. If Mordejai wrote to ITS after the war, his correspondence is still on file there. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC has copies of many ITS records.
