Family stories #ukraine

My grandfather Harry Schlissel served in San Diego and Texas making b-planes in WWI. While he was in San Diego I am told during guard duties he caught someone trying to break into the country or the base.. How would I find out if the story was true?
He also said his school in Detroit burned down. I was lucky I found the name of the school. It was destroyed but not burned down. He only went a few years to school, let's say till he was 10 years.
He did grown up to be successful thru hard work. He loved to work, even if he only made 1 dollar.
I remember just before he retired.. He asked me to drive him to a pawnshop in LA and he bought rifles. I had to write the checks he use to shake so bad.
