The December 26, 2003 issue of the Forward, carried the obituary of Dora
WASSERMAN, called the Grand Dame of the Yiddish Theater. Born in the
Ukraine, she fled to Kazakhstan at the start of World War 2, and eventually
made her way to Canada in 1950. In Montreal, she formed the Yiddish Drama
Group which evolved into the Yiddish Theatre and was later renamed as the
Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre.
She was responsible as producer and/or director for the presentation of
more than 70 plays since the Yiddish Theatre was founded in 1967. In 1993,
she was the recipient of Canada's highest honor awarded to civilians, the
Order of Canada. Quebec's Order of Quebec was awarded in October 2003. Ms.
Wasserman died of natural causes on December 15, 2003 in Montreal. She is
survived by her children, Bryna Wasserman of Montreal and Ella GEFFEN of
Israel, as well as grand children and great grand children.
