YB translation questions #yizkorbooks

Roni S. Liebowitz

While editing the translation of a chapter in the Belchatow Yizkor Book, we
are stuck on how to interpret the following. The Yiddish words are
transliterated below:

1)The first question relates to the correct translation of the Yiddish word
"khsdr" [khaf-samech-daled-resh] and its adjectival form, "khsdrdike." There
are several instances of it in this Yizkor Book chapter:

a) "That succeeded completely with the khsdrdike strikes ..."

a) "Because of the khsdr growing reprisals and arrests of leftist activists,
in Belchatow, just like in the entire land, the Red Relief Campaign
[hilfs-aktsiye] was organized."

c) "We also suffered >from the khsdrdike arrests among our leaders ..." ;
and," However, our work was made very difficult by the khsdrke arrests of
our best activists ..."

2) The second question is the translation of the two words, "geirshnt"
[gimel-ayin-yod-resh-shin-nun-tet]
and "gezerd" [gimel-ayin-zayin-ayin-resh-daled] in the following sentence:

"Actually, the society geirshnt the closed "gezerd" and popularized the idea
of the Jewish Autonomous Region in Birobidzhan [in the far east of the
Soviet Union]."

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
