The Island of Rhodes in the South Aegean, has an area known as “la Juderia” the Jewish Quarter. It was in the Old Town for 2,300 years until July 23,1944.  Jews of Rhodes were noted back in the Maccabean times in the second century B.C.E. This year was the 75th anniversary of the deportation to Auschwitz.  The original Jews were the Romaniotes who were assimilated into the Sephardic Jewish customs and language.  Moment Magazine has an article on this. Included in the article is a photograph of a plaque next to the synagogue Kahal Shalom with the list of names of those who were deported—such as Ventoiura, Nahamias, Beneviste and many others.
