Re: false negatives #dna

Gary,
I had a similar situation in my family, where the results did not show
that either I or my second cousin was related to our mutual second cousin.
First I started composing an email to Bennett Greenspan (which I eventually
sent). But while I was working on it, I uploaded my cousins raw data from
Family Finder to www.GEDMATCH.com. (Mine was already up there). After the
results were processed by GEDMATCH, I asked them to compare the two kits.
They came back with 2.9 generations to MRCA (most recent common ancestor)
which is consistent with second cousin. That determined that (a) the DNA
did show the relationship and I did not need to go looking for the
"milkman", and (b) that FamilyTreeDNA somehow missed the closest
relationships. I did send the email off to Bennett (although - I think
reporting the problem using their form probably would have worked as well).
Apparently when they ran the matches they missed some of the "blocks".
Within two days, they re-ran the matches - and low and behold it showed all
of our true relationships.
If the GEDMATCH had not shown the relationship then I would have questioned
whether the lab results were correct, given the known relationship.
