Henry, this appears to be an archaic phrase and if you search the
internet you will find a few examples of its "non-silver usage"!

This word is used in Germany often today. So it is not archaic.

This is a slangword:
Versilbern = sell stuff (here kosher meat) to anybody for money.
If you receive money for stuff = etwas versilbert haben = (in the past)
received silver coins.
Also I believe too that he was a salesman for kosher meat.
