Austria-Czech SIG #Austria-Czech Re. Military records in the Austro-Hungarian Empire #austria-czech

Dear Jewish Genners:

Thank you for all the replies to my query about finding military
records for my grandfather who served on two occasions in the
Austro-Hungarian Army, once when he lived in Galicia and a second
time during WWI when he lived in Vienna. I review below some
of the comments and questions that I received for the
benefit of all those who asked that I broadcast them.

Emailer 1 said the military records were left behind in Galicia and
no longer exist, but perhaps they are hiding in the Lvov
Archives or somewhere else.

Emailer 2 said that the records were once free but now cost
about 80 Euros. That emailer also said that the records
from outside Austria were destined for Prague and Thyrnau and
all the later have been lost. Vienna still has records of
gallantry, officers, and higher ranks.

Emailer 3 suggested emailing The Central State Historical Archives
of Ukraine in Lviv and asking if they have such documents.

Emailer 4 suggested that the records I sought might be in the
military archives in Poland.

Emailer 5 suggested that the Kriegsarchiv keeps only
officer's records.

Emailer 6 asked for the cost of obtaining records >from the
Kriegsarchiv.

A number of emailers asked for contact information on
the Kriegsarchiv.

In response to requests by several people, here is my experience.
My gf was a private in his second tour of duty and I did receive
his military records for that tour >from the Kriegsarchiv in Vienna.
So the Kriegsarchiv has records for recruits who were not officers.
I requested his military records in June 2002 and received them in
August 2002. There was a report summarizing his service 1915-1917 and
four pages of copies of Grundbuchblaetter. There was no charge.
There was no information on his earlier service when he resided
in Galicia.

The contact information for the Kriegsarchiv can be found by
searching in Google for "Kriegsarchiv" but is given below
for convenience.
