In his autobiography "In the Nick of Time", my distant cousin Max HEITLINGER
describes his brother-in-law Richard Moschkowitz thus: "Bielitz was the
headquarters of the Infantry Regiment Number 55; many young men
volunteered... Among them was Richard, Nelly's brother, who soon advanced
to lieutenant." He goes on to say, "he got one of the first gold medals of
valour..." for an action on the Italian front, where he turned captured
Italian cannons back on their original owners.
It would seem this should be a fairly well documented event, but I need
advice on how to go about looking for it. I've found on the internet that in
1914 the 55th was in Lemburg [now L'viv] & the 13th was in Bielitz, but I
don't know what to make of that fact, other than perhaps the author's memory
was erroneous after all that time.
Thanks for any help in advance!
