Nice to hear >from you, John. I know what you mean about the scarcity of
English in some parts of Toronto.

Getting on to the substance of the original message, my husband and I drove
through several small-ish towns in the Czech Republic a few years ago. We
found often that people would ask or answer questions (directions, did we
want another beer?) in German. But if you asked people if they spoke Russian,
they practically spat. I thought that one reason could be that under the
Nazi occupation you usually knew who your enemies were, so speaking German
was a matter of practicality, but that under the Soviet occupation you
couldn't trust anyone so Russian and Russians were hated.
