Y Haplogroup discrepancy #dna

Sheila Coyne

My husband, who is 25% Jewish on paper (paternal grandfather) but 14%
by DNA testing, recently received updated results >from 23andMe which
specify his Y haplogroup as R-L266. However, Family Tree DNA, which
previously had his paternal haplogroup as R-M124, now says it's R-F1758.
Either way, the 2 companies appear to have come up with different
results. Can someone explain this in terms I might understand? Any
clarification/explanation greatly appreciated.
