Belarus SIG #Belarus "Holocaust in Belarus" #belarus
David M. Fox <davefox73@...>
The September 2004 update for Yizkor Book Projects indicates that there are
updates for "Holocaust in Belarus" by our SIG member Leonid Smilovitsky and
the yizkor book for Derechin, Belarus.
I would like to publicly thank Dr. Leonid Smilovitsky not only for his
generous permission to allow the translation of his book to be placed on the
JewishGen Yizkor Book Project
<http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/belarus/belarus.html>, but also his
dedication to researching and recording, and publishing the history of the
Jewish community of Belarus though his holocaust volume as well has his many
articles which appear in the Belarus SIG On Line Newsletter
I would also like to thank Irene Newhouse for her leadership as the
coordinator for getting "Holocaust in Belarus" translated into English and
also some of her translators who have already translated the table of
contents and several chapters of the book. I urge everyone to support the
translation of this volume
<http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/YizkorTrans.html> and other
yizkor books for your specific shtetls.
Yizkor books are a very good source to learn how you ancestors lived in the
towns and shtetls of eastern Europe. Most of the books cover not only the
holocaust period, but provide a history of the Jews in a particular shtetl.
There is more to genealogy then just names and dates.
I would also like to thank Kevin Hanit in Canada for heading up the YB
project for Derechin <http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Derechin/Derechin.html
and for his personal translation efforts.I hope that more of our SIG members will get involved with the Yizkor Book
Project for Belarus shtetls by either volunteering to lead a YB translation
project, translating chapters >from Yizkor books, or donating funds for paid
