<Has anyone else encountered the name Gamshei or know what it might have been
translated to in the US? My online searches have turned up very few people
Yes. Gamshei and its relatives (Ovshei, Evsei) are all variants of the
name Yoshue, commonly given as a Russian given name to boys whose Hebrew name
was Yehoshua. (Alexander Beider, A Dictionary of Ashkenazic Given Names 450-452
Most of these people took the English name Joshua when they immigrated,
but I know of one such person who became Herman.
