<Has anyone else encountered the name Gamshei or know what it might have been
translated to in the US? My online searches have turned up very few people
named Gamshei.>
Yes. Gamshei and its relatives (Ovshei, Evsei) are all variants of the
name Yoshue, commonly given as a Russian given name to boys whose Hebrew name
was Yehoshua. (Alexander Beider, A Dictionary of Ashkenazic Given Names 450-452
(2001)).
Most of these people took the English name Joshua when they immigrated,
but I know of one such person who became Herman.
