I would to comment on the online material >from Seven Bessarabian Directories
Bessarabia Gubernia Address-Calendars for 1902, 1906 (partial), 1909, 1910,
and 1913; Chishinau and Bessarabia Directory for 1924 (Anuarul Orasului
Chisinau si al judetelelor din Basarabia si cu Calendarul); and Chisinau
Directory for 1940 (Anuarul Chisinaului).
It is a very good way to find some trace of your relatives, and I thing
Logan is doing a great service to all of us. In order to take advantage of
Logan's work you would need to have some Russian background or Romanian. I
wish we have more of such directories, especially PHONE directories from
Kishinev and other towns.
In a mean time I want to let you know that at Bessarabia SIG there is a
project to RESEARCH and translate Bessarabia Guberniya Address-Calendars.
That is a very different project, and a person who is working on it - Yuriy
Daylis - have uploaded to Bessarabia SIG a lot of material including
statistical tables, list of Jews involved in public life of Bessarabia. You
can get to this table at Bessarabia SIG / Research projects / 30. Bessarabia
Annual books, 1862-1914. 5 Books/calendars are already researched. A
Russian speaking person spend good amount of time to find out correct
translation of professions/departments. That was in fact a great research
work, because many of the terms >from 19 century even Russian speakers cannot
understand. Please check this tables out! They have great material in
them. By the way Rabbis were also considered as people involved in Public
