Bessarabia SIG #Bessarabia Post conference #3 message - Moldova Archives #bessarabia

Yefim Kogan

Hi everybody,

Today I want to point you to Moldova Archive research I started and presented a bit at the conference.
You can find the research material in slides at our Bessarabia SIG website / Research / Genealogical
conferences.

I think it is very promising to know that there are a lot of records available at Moldova Archives, and
that very possible that FamilySearch will digitize these records.

But (there is always a 'but') in order to translate and index these records we will need more people
on these projects. The existing two large sets of records we still have - Revision List and Vital Records
(almost done), will require translators and that is why in order to work on new records - I hope they
will start coming at the end of the year-beginning of 2019, we will need many more people.

The most important role will be for people who will manage such projects.

There are two ways of doing this:
- by type of a document, like for example, someone will be in charge of all Educational records,
another person for Land documents

- the second way is to be responsible for documents/records for a district, like someone is responsible
for all documents for Soroki district, or another person responsible for Akkerman district.

My preference is by districts, but if you decide otherwise, that would be fine too.

Here are couple of qualifications for the Project managers: they should be familiar with JewishGen.org
in general, and had some experience with projects we are doing. It also preferable that such person
can translate >from Russian, but that is not required. We had Project managesr on similar project
without Russian. How best to manage such projects we can discuss later, and I can share my
experience >from similar projects.

I would expect that many of you will come forward that you would want to be in charge of records for
Khotin district or all Education records, etc. The thing is that if we will not put more efforts in this
work, nothing will be done or it will go for ever. Sorry for such pessimistic view.

Let's open discussion on this. Maybe you have better ideas of how this should be done. The only
thing which I have doubts at this time is an automatic translation of such documents... Automatic
translation can work with printed documents, and not the handwriting we have.

I am looking forward to hear >from you.

Shana Tovah v'metukah. Have Healthy sweet New Year!
