Bessarabia SIG #Bessarabia Re: Bessarabian archives #bessarabia

Dear Helene,

Thank you for posting an interesting message.  I would be glad to respond to you and the whole group,
because the topic is very important.

Our group is getting the Vital Records (Births, Marriages, Deaths), Revision Lists >from very beginning of
establishing our SIG, even before that when we were part of Romania SIG. You may know that these
records we have already translated more than 300,000, and have more to work with. These records
came to us >from LDS, at Salt Lake City whose people went to Moldovan Archives and copied many of
them.  JewishGen had an agreement with LDS, by which we had access to the records.  we still have
probably another 30,000 - 50,000 records to translate. I am in contact with LDS all the time and
getting new microfilms for translation. These records LDS copied in 1990s.  Many records we have
translated have links to copies of the records at LDS.

For couple of years there is a new effort >from LDS to go back to Moldovan Archives and copy more
records, like Educational, Land, court, etc. The negotiation is in process and hopefully be completed
soon, and LDS is interested in sharing records with us.

The JRI-Poland model is very different >from ours.  Also to negotiate directly with Moldovan Archives is
not an easy task.

Helene,  Kamenets Podolsk was not part of Bessarabia, but Podolia gubernia.  Also we found that some
of the records >from 19 c, are stored not in Kishinev, but in district archives, like in Orgeev, possible in
others, and I communicated that information to LDS.

All the best,
Yefim Kogan

Has anyone ever investigated whether there might be a realistic possibility of entering into agreements
with Bessarabian archives (Kishinev, Kamenets Podolsk, etc.) similar to the agreements JRI-Poland has
with the Polish archives?.........................
