Pavel Bernshtam

As we see >from various sources Bernshtam (Bershtam) surnames was
widespread among jews only in Cournald (now - part of Latvia). The
first time we meet this surname is 1816 census in Mitau (now -
Elgava). In this census we see a number of Bernshtam families and we
can suppose that they were not relatives - those were only 2 first
generations with surnames and surname "Bernshtam" was given by the
first name of family father - "Ber"

This is list of Bernshtam families >from 1834 census of Mitau (name,

The first family - Levin Ber Bernshtam (i.e. Levin, son of Ber) - my ancestors.

In the same time we see many Bernshtam families in other Courland
towns - Bauska and Tuckums, but most likely they are not related to
us. Famous russian sculptor Leopold Bernshtam, Spain civil war hero
Pesakh Bernshtam, russian historian Natan Bernshtam, russian
businessman Eugene Bernshtam - ancestors of those families.

from Latvia's "Pinkas kehilot" we learn that in 18 century there are
in Mitau lived 60 rich jewish families, but in the end of 18 century
many poor jews arrived to Mitau >from Poland. We know >from Y-DNA
comparison, that nearest relatives on Bernshtam line nave Poland
roots, so we can suppose that our ancestors were part of this
migration >from Poland. We also know that they were very poor people -
we do not see "our" Bernshtams in list of people who donated money to
religious book publishing. And we know that only poor people responded
in 1830-1840s years to the government's call move to Siberia, settle
there and become farmers ...
