Lance Ackerfeld <lance.ackerfeld@...>

Shalom,

As is my custom, at the beginning of each month I endeavor to let you know
some of the goings-on and highlights relating to the Yizkor Book Project
over the previous month.

For a start, once again, I am pleased to inform you that two additional
translation projects were completed during this past month and the projects
I am referring to are:

- Czestochowa, Poland (Resistance and Destruction in Ghetto Czestochowa)
which Gloria Berkenstat Freund has single-handedly translated >from beginning
to end - quite a remarkable accomplishment. It should be noted here that
this is the second book which she has completely translated and kindly
presented to the Yizkor Book Project. The complete translation of yet
another Yizkor book about this community is on the horizon and Gloria does
deserve our utmost appreciation for these translations and all the work she
does for the YB Project.
- Jonava, Lithuania (Jonava On the Banks of the Vylia; In memory of the
destroyed Jewish community of Jonava) has been deftly coordinated over many
years by Susan Goldsmith and it is purely through her dedication to this
project, that the full translation of this book has become a reality. We
thank Susan sincerely for seeing this considerable project through to its
successful completion.

from time to time, we add in transliterations of the necrologies appearing
in the various the Yizkor books, as these important lists do provide us with
unique information on the people >from the particular communities who were
killed in the Holocaust. These necrologies were compiled by the survivors of
these communities and whilst these lists don't always include all those
killed, they are considerable in length and include important facts and at
the same time, do remind us the unfathomable, enormity of the Holocaust.
The necrologies added last month, for instance, were for the communities of
Kamen Kashirskiy and Kuty in the Ukraine and include several thousand names.

Over the years, we have transliterated a great deal of the necrologies and
our intention is to continue transliterating these lists till all are
available online. In parallel, Max Heffler and his team have been suiting
the lists that have been prepared so that they can be uploaded to the Yizkor
Book necrology database, providing ready access to the names and relevant
data >from the books existing in the Yizkor Book Project.

Finally, I would like to note that we recently received the first
translation into Polish of an article >from the Nowy Dwor Mazowiecki Yizkor
book and more will be added >from time to time. The YB Project is about
making the material >from the Yizkor Books as widely exposed as possible and
translating the text into Polish allows ready access to readers of this
language to material concerning the thriving communities that existed in
Poland before the Holocaust, material which is quite often unavailable
anywhere else.

And now for details of all the updates and additions that were carried out
in the Yizkor Book Project in May.
