Danzig/Gedansk SIG #Danzig #Gdansk #Germany #Poland Danzig surname adoption list, 1814 #poland #danzig #gdansk #germany

Logan J. Kleinwaks

I am pleased to announce that the list of surnames adopted by Jewish
citizens in Danzig in 1814, when Prussia reoccupied the city, is now online
in the Articles section of our SIG website www.jewishgen.org/danzig.
Judging >from your JewishGen Family Finder entries, many of you can find
surnames you are researching on this list.

As noted in the Notes column of this list, three of these people had the
same pre-surname names (i.e., given name + patronymic) as Danzig Jews who
attended the Leipzig fairs during the 1750s and 1760s. The surnames they
adopted in 1814 are LEWISOHN, LILIENTHAL, and REYMANN. Hopefully, we will
be able to prove or disprove these connection based on our future research.

I will soon be posting additional identifying information about some of
these people, such as their possible relationships to people named in
inscriptions on objects >from Danzig that are in the collection of the Jewish
Museum in New York. If you have additional identifying information about
anyone on this list, please contact me.

Some of you have asked about my connection to Danzig. My gggggf is number
429 on the surname adoption list, [Rabbi] Gerson Naphtali NATHAN.

Best regards and Shabbat Shalom,
