Each month we of the Yizkor Book Project endeavor to make headway in
translating the oh-so-many Yizkor books that have been published over the
years. Whilst the challenge is great, it is always heartwarming to see that
one of the projects to translate one of these books begun many years ago,
has now reached a successful completion. This time the book is "Ratno; Story
of a Destroyed Jewish Community" whose translations project has been adeptly
guided over the years by Lynne Siegel and this is certainly the place to
thank Lynne for her unending dedication in coordinating this project and
seeing it through to the end.

As one Yizkor book is completed, another begins and this month we have added
in the first sections of a Yizkor book on Sobrance, Slovakia which has been
prepared by William Leibner and Larry Price. We thank them for this
important donation and, hopefully over time, the complete book will be
placed online and available to all.

The Yizkor books, as I frequently point out, contain volumes unique
information on our lost communities. Part of the special information
contained in the books are the necrologies and this past month, with the
amazing assistance the of Judy Petersen, the necrology >from the Baia Mare,
Romania Yizkor book has been placed online. This particular list contains
well over 2,000 names and while the death of so many is truly disturbing, at
least their names are not forgotten and scraps of information about their
lives - their ages and family connections, remain with us.

Also of particular note this past month is the addition of a Hebrew
translation of the Shumskoye, Ukraine Yizkor book which was thankfully
provided by Esther Weinschelbaum who has already prepared quite a number of
translations into Hebrew of a number of Yizkor books dealing with Ukrainian
communities. These translations allow Hebrew speakers who are unable to
read the original Yiddish or our English translations to also learn about
the communities of their forefathers and this certainly in keeping with our
mission of disseminating information about the Holocaust and destroyed
Jewish communities to a wide as possible audience.
