DNA Research #DNA Re: If Results are Not Beneficial to Research, Why Test? #dna

Hi Carolyn,

The usefulness of DNA testing for expanding one's family tree is
indeed questionable. In most cases the matches you find will lead
to common ancestors who lived long before the reach of your family
tree. However, in some cases the test can be a magic bullet, as
should be the case of your direct maternal GGGM. If you have
another suspected maternal line descendant then an MTDNA test
should give you a good answer. If the DNA doesn't match, you know
there was a break in the hereditary line. If they match perfectly,
there is a very good chance (close to but not quite 100%) that you
have a GGGM in common.
