Werner Zimmt's posting, in turn, struck a note with me, regarding my
JOSUA / JOSHUA ancestors.

My great grandfather's brother John JOSHUA, born in Hamburg Germany 1 Dec
1814, moved to London UK. He first appears in the 1881 census, which lists
him as a stock jobber, and by which time there weren't (and wouldn't any longer
have been any children - if there were any - still living in his household).

The only other JOSHUA I find in the Census is Philip Joshua, also in
finance, married to Margarethe (Mary Sophie) SICHEL, though it appears that
Philip JOSHUA may be unrelated to "my" John JOSHUA. Margarethe (Mary Sophie)
SICHEL is the daughter of Gustav August SICHEL:born 8 May 1825 and Henriette
Moritz GOLDSCHMID, born 4 April 1830.

Gustavus had 3 brothers and emigrated to Manchester with his father
Sylvestro Augustus Sichel. Sylvestro, his father and his son Julius were
all Honorary Vice Consul to Austria in Manchester and the family and its
descendants were all involved in the manufacturing of Wool, Cotton and
textiles in Manchester (Lancashire) and Bradford (West Riding in Yorkshire)
England. This was all part of a great change in the north of England as the
Industrial Revolution was taking hold and the Empire was at its strongest
during this time. Gustavus went to London to become a stock broker and is
the only member of the family who did not stay in the North during the first
two decades after they emigrated. Kind regards,
