Familysearch is busy indexing the 1940 US census. The following link
will keep you updated as to which states are now fully indexed and
searchable by name, and those in process. It is a free site.

As of today, the following states are now 100% searchable by name: Alaska,
Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, New
Hampshire, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Wyoming. Hawaii and
Louisiana are 98% complete, and Mississippi 99% complete.

On Ancestry.com, only Nevada, Delaware and DC are complete.
