Hello,

I have hit a large brick wall. I am researching Semon DITTMAN (originally
named Simeon DITTMANN and subsequently Simon) who was born in New York City
on June 28th 1858. Through passport applications and shipping records, I
have established that he left the US in 1895 and I have no evidence so far
that he ever returned. He lived in South Africa until 1906 when he turns
up in Shanghai and the last record I have found was a passport application
to take a holiday in Japan in 1918 after which the trail goes cold.

I have found no record that Semon died in the US and so therefore have
drawn the inference that he probably died in Shanghai or possibly
whilst holidaying in Japan.

Question: is there a data-base or place to where I can send my query in
Shanghai (where Semon claimed to be his permanent home) or possibly Japan.
I have researched in all the usual archival resources but just cannot find
an address or website which I can approach to find out about the remainder
of Semon's life and death. All suggestions gratefully received!

I have also circulated this query to the GERSIG and Early American lists as
Semon's parents (Eduard DITTMANN and Charlotte ROSENFELD) were born in
Bavaria but died in the US, in case someone else is also researching this
DITTMANN family.
