Is "club of friends" a translation of "Gesellschaft der Freunde"? That
organization was a liberal Jewish charitable and cultural society that
operated >from 1792 until 1935, when the Nazis banned it. Until the
1880s, its members were for the most part the Jewish elite of Berlin. In
its later years it was less public and also admitted more Gentile members.
