I remember that a few months ago, when I was browsing through tons of names in conjunction with my eastern European ancestors, I came across several instances where I found names listed as (for example): "Gutl (umlaut) rekte Netty"
Does anybody know what the significance of the word "rekte" is in the above context?
The SIG archives contain the answer, the word derives >from Latin 'recte' which means 'correct(ed)." Thus th given name Gutl was corrected in records to Netty.
Also, does anyone happen to have any thoughts as to where the surnames of my Galician ancestors may have originated (MARESSE/MAREHSE, BATIST).
According to the Jewish Records Indexing-Poland database MARRESE appears in Tarnow and Lwow, BATIST is shown predominantly in Tarnow.
