Responding to Dalya Dektor's query about "Pidhiltz, Poland," one of
the towns where her AST family is said to have lived, Igor Holyboroda
<<May it be the Jewish name for Pidhirtsy or Pidhirtsi, Galicia (now
the city or village approx 80 km to the East >from Lviv, Lviv oblast)?
(I think, it should not be Pidhaytsi [Ukr] or Podhajce [Pol]).>>
I disagree. Two clues that Podhajce could be the town:
- Searching on JRI-Poland for the surname AST in a town that starts
with Pod or Pid brings up 12 records -- all filed in Podhajce
(Podhaitza in Yiddish).
- The distance >from Berezhany/Brzezany, which Dalya knows to be
an AST town, to Pidhaytsi/Podhajce is only about 17 miles; distance
to Pidhirtsi is 47 miles.
