at the Center for Jewish History

Sunday, May 31, 2015, Portland, Oregon
Monday, June 1, 2015, Seattle, Washington

Here are the details of our first program -- in New York City:

Galician Archival Records Project Updates
and "Galician Portraits: the Story of Jews, Gentiles, and Emperors"
with author, Andrew Zalewski

Sunday, May 17
11:00AM - 1:00PM
Center for Jewish History (Auditorium)
15 West 16th St.
New York, NY 10011

Learn about the Galician Archival Records Project, the Cadastral Map
Room and the latest discoveries made in the Lviv Historical Archives by
president Pamela Weisberger, followed by Andrew Zalewski discussing
his new book, "Galician Portraits: In Search of Jewish Roots."

"Galician Portraits" by Andrew Zalewski is anchored in Austrian Galicia
(1772-1918), which once spanned parts of today's Poland and Ukraine,
but it also covers centuries of Jewish history in the region, before and
after Galicia existed. Large cities, small towns, and tiny farming villages
are the tale's backdrop. In them, people >from a variety of ethnic groups
live alongside a large community of Israelites. The laws and trends of
the day were hotly debated within it. A perpetual tension between old
and new sometimes brought dramatic consequences, even breakaway
factions. Passionate arguments about language, customs, and loyalties
easily erupted. Andrew's talk will be illustrated by archival pictures
of Galicia, genealogical findings, and old maps of Galicia.

We'll leave plenty of time for your questions and you are invited to stay
for the JGSNY program in the afternoon, "Holly Golightly Was a Nice
Jewish Girl: Our Ancestors Reinvented" at 2:00PM.

Lunch 1:00PM - 2:00PM: Join us at an informal, post-program
brown-bag lunch and Galitzianer chat in the mezzanine chapel at the
Center for Jewish History. No food is sold at the Center, so you must
bring your own.

The Gesher Galicia program and lunch are free and open to the public.

If you cannot attend our New York City program, Gesher Galicia will be
videotaping it for viewing on our website this summer.

Please note: Although we had planned to offer a talk by Valerie
Schatzker on her book, "Jewish Oil Magnates of Galicia," she cannot join
us due to the delay in publication. We plan to have her speak at next
year's program.

Double Program:
"Galicia, the Austrian Empire & Beyond: Mining Unusual Records
in Archives and Online to Expand Your Research"
and "Touring the Gesher Galicia Website" with Pamela Weisberger

Not everything is online. Learn how to research the people of a
community within the context of the place they lived, in all its historical
layers, using online and archival resources. We'll focus on the record
collections of Gesher Galicia to demonstrate the surprises in these
genealogical treasures. For researchers whose interests lie beyond
Galicia, there will be examples of similar records pertaining to research
in other countries. We will also look at historical newspapers throughout
Eastern Europe. Putting theory into practice Take an interactive tour of
Gesher Galicia's award-winning website and search engines. This site is
a one-stop resource for people interested in researching their families
and ancestral towns >from the former Austro-Hungarian province of
Galicia with content for 500+ Galician towns and over 3,000 Galician
families. We'll do real-time searches (showing you the special "sort"
features on the site) to demonstrate the best ways to mine the riches of
this virtual "gateway to Galicia."

And don't forget to join us at the IAJGS 2015 Conference in Jerusalem.
