Three new historic maps of Trembowla/Terebovlia have just been
published on the Gesher Galicia Map Room! With the help of friends in Ukraine and Israel, Gesher Galicia has located, scanned, and assembled three historical maps of Trembowla (now Terebovlia in the Ternopil oblast of Ukraine). It's an interesting set of maps: 1828 indication sketch with property owners' names: https://maps.geshergalicia.org/cadastral/trembowla-terebovlia-1828/ high-scale town center detail map >from the same 1828 survey (and more names!): https://maps.geshergalicia.org/cadastral/trembowla-terebovlia-1828-detail/ 1861 lithographed cadastral map >from an updated survey: https://maps.geshergalicia.org/cadastral/trembowla-terebovlia-1861/ In addition to linking families to places in the town through property numbers and names, these maps also provide visual clues to the Austrian Empire's developing land measurement and cartographic arts. The earlier of these maps is now nearly 200 years old, but even in its transitional state it already shows high geographic accuracy and attention to detail. We invite you to take a virtual stroll through historical Trembowla! These original paper maps are preserved by the State Archives of Ternopil Oblast (Ukraine): http://www.archives.gov.ua/Eng/Archives/ra19.php The GG Map Room home page: https://maps.geshergalicia.org/ Jay Osborn Gesher Galicia Digital Map Manager Lviv, Ukraine maps@... |
