Many Jewish funerals (to this day) ask that flowers be omitted, and instead,
charitable donations made.

I was looking at obituaries in the NY Times for the early 1900s for
various
unrelated branches of Bergida families. It struck me that several of the
obits specifically said "no flowers." Other Jewish obituaries did not say
this.

Is this "no flowers" a tradition that I never heard of, and significant in
some way, or am I just looking at families that considered flowers at a
funeral to be a waste of money. The families were first generation from
Ungvar and Munkacs and did not know each other.

Shanah Tovah and thank you all for the excellent insight and advice you
have posted over the past year.
