Hungary SIG #Hungary Visiting Budapest Cemeteries #hungary

I am writing to the whole group, as this may be of interest to those planni=
ng to go to an old cemetery. A few years agao, I visited Hungary with my h=
usband and children, and wanted to go to the Kozma cemetery to find a coupl=
e of graves in particular. I had the precise locations writtten down. The=
staff at the entry building put us in the right direction, and I started r=
eading the markers at the side of the road. There were several older men o=
n bicycles cruising around. Perhaps I am mistaken, but we believed them to=
be homeless or very financially disadvantaged. In any case, one offered t=
o help us find the grave - and he did. He plowed into the row and took us =
to the right depression and began to rip off some vines to show us the righ=
t name. I paid him the equivalent of about $10 (he didn't ask, but I knew =
that payment was expected, and I was glad to do it), and my family and I co=
ntinued the clearing of vines. It was a bit of work, but we managed. I ha=
d brought clippers. I don't know if what we did was safe or dangerous, but=
it seemed the thing to do, and I believe that that's what the bicycle fell=
ows were there for.

I also visited Salgotarjan cemetery, where I paid a donation to the gatekee=
per and wandered easily to find the grave I needed.

In Baja, it was tougher. We also paid the the gatekeeper, but the section =
that we needed was so large and overgrown and there was no one to help us f=
ind what we needed.

Hope that this is of some help.
