Hungary SIG #Hungary (Hungary) Dohany Synagogue (Budapest) Selected by European Union for European Heritage Label #hungary

Jan Meisels Allen

The European Union has chosen nine historical sites in Europe to add to the
"European Heritage Label", one of them being the grand Dohany Street
Synagogue in Budapest. The European Heritage Label is given to those
symbolizing "European ideals, values, history, and integrations". An
independent panel selects the candidates for the label. With the addition of
the 9 new additions, there are a total of 38 sites given the designation
over the past four years. The European Commission will formally designate
the sites in February 2018, with an award ceremony in March 2018.

The Dohany Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Europe, was built in the
1850's for the Neolog community . The synagogue complex includes the Jewish
Museum and Archives, the Heroes Synagogue and a courtyard and garden used as
a memorial for Holocaust victims and as a cemetery. The Heroes Temple was
built in 1931 next to the Dohany St. synagogue in honor of the Jewish
soldiers killed in World War I. It now forms part of a Holocaust memorial
complex in the grounds of the Dohany Street Synagogue. The synagogue is
also known as The Great Synagogue or Tabakgasse Synagogue,
