was known variously as Ben, or Ber Hirsch, or perhaps something similar, died
in England some time prior to 1908. I have had no luck with JOWBR or any of
several BMD databases in trying to find a date. Can anyone suggest a new
approach?

Alan - he is in the 1901 census: Ben Hirsch aged 65 called living with his son
and large family in East Ham. He is listed as married but I cannot see his wife
at the same address. This could be mistake or a clue. Where was she?
Have you followed-up with all the listed children?

I did find this death: RACKOW Mary Jane 76 Hackney 1b 286 in June quarter 1907

I also note that Abram and Rachel in 1891 become Albert and Rose - ie the son
an daughter-in-law of Ben Hirsch. Was Mary your great-grandmother? I cannot see
her in the 1901 census - but have not looked that hard. If she was, have you
her death certificate? Was she a widow at death?

This obviously brings up a number of possibilities re local death registers,
cemeteries, congregations, synagogue records etc. Or perhaps Ben returned to
Wilna to see his wife and died there? Do you definitely know he died in
England?

Please remember that all the death registers have not yet been indexed on
FreeBMD and also that RACKOW may not have been your great-grandfather's real
name.
