Sue Levy

Mark LEVY (Mordecai ben Moshe haLevi) was born in Plymouth, England in 1800.
According to the document >from his second marriage (to Ann Marks ROSENTHAL),
his father was Moses LEVY, Jewish teacher.

Mark married Mary LAMBERT, a Christian girl, and they made their home in
Guernsey in the Channel Islands in the mid-1820s. Mark died there in
December 1848.

Through online sources and family trees we now have extensive knowledge of
the lives and descendants of most of their children (who migrated to
Australian and New Zealand) and those of Mark's second wife, but we know
nothing more of Mark's family background.
We do not know names of any of Mark's siblings, or his mother's name, or any
other family data, >from any of the sources we have examined, including the
Susser Archive.

The other family we hope to extend back in time is Mark's machetonim - Mark
MORDECAI LEVI and his wife Esther, also of Devon. Similarly, we have had the
good fortune to locate some of their children, also in the Antipodes.

Do records of his time exist for the Plymouth Jewish community? Are there
burial, marriage, birth and brit milah records? Susser's list of Jewish
headstone inscriptions in the old Plymouth Jewish cemetery is frustratingly
unhelpful because most surnames are not given.

If anyone can shed any light on the location and accessibility of such
records, especially if online, we would be delighted to know.
