Kaganoff is his "Dictionary of Jewish Names" mentions that Valen is a Roman
name but it was used by Jews in Talmudic times and there is even a Rabbi Valen
mentioned in the book. I also went to school with a Jewish fellow named
Valenstein.

Perhaps the name Valen persisted in some Jewish communities like other
Greco-Roman names such as Kayla, Alexander, and Felix.
