JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Two Different NYC Marriage Certificates for the Same Couple #general

David & Deborah Peskin <dx2etc@...>

On FHC microfilm, I found TWO different NYC marriage certificates for my
grandparents, Louis KESSNER and Claire TOBIAS, within a few days of each
other. The first one is dated 3 December 1926, and is signed by the Bronx
Deputy City Clerk. The second one is dated 11 December 1926, and is signed
by a rabbi. (I also have a ketubah dated 11 December 1926, signed by the
same rabbi.)

Was it customary to obtain two different NYC marriage certificates when the
civil and religious marriages occurred on different dates? If not, does
anyone have any ideas as to why there were two marriage certificates?
Thanks in advance for your help.
