If an individual is related to someone through both his parents, do
we determine the relationship (e.g., cousin, uncle etc) on the paternal
link, or do we base it on the closest link? For example, if my 1st
cousin marries my neice, is their child termed my first cousin once
removed, or is the child my grand-nephew?

from a genealogic perspective, does it really matter which relationship

is written down? Do genealogical software programs have a preferential
naming system?
