German-born STRAUSS emigrants active in banking/art equity fund, research/documentation #germany

Lisa Thaler <lisathaler@...>

German-born refugees Gideon STRAUSS and Herbert A. STRAUSS are
memorialized in recent paid death notices in the New York Times (1 and
14 Mar. 2005, respectively) and of likely interest to Ger-SIG
subscribers. [No familial relationship assumed.]

Gideon STRAUSS (b. 1915 Berlin) was a banker in pre-State Israel
(1935+) and opened the New York branch of Bank Leumi Le-Israel (1948+).
STRAUSS then developed the art financing subsidiary of Rosenthal &
Rosenthal. Please contact me with any anecdotes of/experiences with
this art division. STRAUSS's memoir "It Occurred to Me: A Personal
Account" (Xlibris Corp., 2004) includes 3 descendant charts: Emanuel
STRAUSS [m. LORSCH], Salomon ROSENFELD [m. HIRSCH], and Richard CALE
[m. HENSCHEL] and family photographs; and details life among fellow
German-born emigres in pre-State Israel (see also LAQUEUR's "Generation
Exodus" on this topic), and of his professional activities.

Professor Herbert A. STRAUSS (bp. Wurzburg) made significant
contributions to the field of Jewish genealogy. Former president of
Research Foundation for Jewish Immigration. Editor of multi-volume
"Jewish Immigrants of the Nazi Period in the USA." Board Member of
American Federation of Jews >from Central Europe.
