On Monday Steven Chall posed a question to any Librarians on this list
regarding the use of call numbers in different library systems.
Since I qualify for that description let me reply that Steven is quite
correct in pointing out that call numbers for the same item can vary in
different institutions. Cataloging is still part art, part science, and
many systems are used around the world. Therefore, based on 40 years of
library experience my answer is invariably: When searching for for an
item one should _always_ consult the catalog of whichever library you are
in at the moment! If you cannot locate what you are seeking then your
next best resource is your Reference Librarian! As one of my Library
School professors used to tell us, "You do not have to know the answer
to everything - just how to find it!!" ;-)!
