JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen The Surname MOHEL as part of "The Oldest Professions" #general

Dear All,
In this morning's edition of *THE FORWARD* the columnist Philologos
focused on a question >from Richard Israel of Mass who asked: "Is there any
name in Jewish life that honors an ancestor mohel (italicized in article) or
circumciser?"
Philologos did a survey of Israeli telephone books and he concluded
that "The name Mohel does exist among Jews, but it is very rare." Anyone with
thoughts or comments on why Mohel seems to be such a rare and uncommon
surname - especially as compared to such other religiously connected surnames
as Rabiner, Dayan, Hasid, Beck all of which the author touches upon in this
article - can contact Philologos at philologos@forward.com
Shalom,
