Yesterday (4-20-00) before sending in my response to Jerry Segal's
inquiry about Zvanetz, I deleted a parentheticized sentence which said:
"(There is also a town called "Zvantchik," also known as "Shwantchik,"
which is southwest of Kiev and, as is Zvanitz, also close to Kamenets
Podolsk.)"
Perhaps I should have left in that sentence to inform Alan Karbritz who
asked on the same day whether "Zhvanchik" might be the same place as
"Zvanetz."
Both towns have very brief entries in Chester G. Cohen's "Shtetl Finder
Gazetterr" but neither Zvanitz nor Zvanchik is listed in the 1962
Columbia-Lippincott Gazetteer. I checked in the latter source for a
"Velikiy Zhvanchik" as Mr. Karbritz wrote the name, but found no entry.
("Veliko" or "Velikiy" are combining forms of the adjective meaning "great"
or "large.")
