Roy Ogus asks regarding a Yankel ben Yankel that he has found and suggests
"One situation that I can envision is that the father died during the
mother's pregnancy, and when the child was born, he was named for his
deceased father. Has anyone heard of this situation before?"
Even today there unfortunately instances in the Ashkenazi community
where a child is named after its father who had died before its birth, it
probably was even more common during the 1800's when the mortality rate was
so high. It is probable that this is indeed the case.
