JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Importance of frequent Internet Searches #general

NFatouros@...

Usually, before I ask or answer questions about names, towns, customs or
history, I look for information in Jewishgen's Discussion Group Archives,
Family Finder, and Infofiles, or on the Internet, and I also rummage around
my bookshelves.

Also, periodically, perhaps every two weeks or so, I do Internet
searches hoping to find some of my family names, especially the fairly
unusual one, BELKOVSKY or BELKOVSKI.

Today, while I was still online, I decided to have another look or two
for my family names before I signed off. I typed in "BELKOVSKI" in the
search engine. A number of URLs which I'd already seen before showed up,
but this time there was also a new URL: it was a page >from the yizkor book
for Sopotskin, and it contained a discussion of Zionist activity of Rabbi
Schemeul Yakov Rabinovitch. The page displayed a group picture I'd not
seen before in which my my grandfather's first cousin Gregor Tzvi BELKOVSKI
appears. Of course, I clicked it on to enlarge and I saved it for eventual
printing.

About a year ago, by doing an internet search for BELKOVSKI I also found
out that his name appears in the yizkor book for Vitebsk. Later, I learned
from a helpful Israeli who loosely translated the chapter on Zionism >from
the Vitebsk yizkor that Gregor Tsvi BELKOVSKI had not visited Vitebsk, as I
had surmised, but had attended a semi-clandestine conference in Moscow at
which he was arrested and put into the Butyrka prison. Gregor Tzvi did not
mention this "incident" in his memoir.

The photograph I found today at:

http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Sopotskin/sop037.html

is one I am grateful for, even though I have several other pictures of
Gregor Zvi and a copy of the report of the 1902 Minsk conference which
was published by M. Nurock soon after it was held.

To think I'd never before today even heard of the town Sopotskin!

Incidentally, the name FELDMAN also appeared on the same page as the
photo of Gregor Tsvi. But I doubt that I am related to "Bella FELDMAN,
daughter of Jacob FELDMAN." My grandfather FELDMAN was >from another part
(Pinsk) of the diasporal forest.
