Another thing to be aware of when searching the California birth index at
Rootsweb is that first names are truncated after 8 letters. So if you're
looking for a Christopher or a Jacqueline and type in the whole first
name, it comes up with no matching entries. If this affects any of you,
try a first initial or group of letters.
I have also had the strange experience of finding a person in that index
on one try, and then not being able to find him later on. He's neither
alive nor adopted, and I tried a variety of searches and can't find him.
I *know* he was in there before, listed right next to his siblings'
names. The siblings are still listed. It doesn't affect my research at
all, but it is a bit perplexing.
