Miriam Nadel mentioned a relative emmigrated >from Poland to Mexico and was
there for "a few years" before entering the U.S. in 1925. He apparently had
a brother in Buenos Aires so it's possible he went to Argentina first.
Miriam asked if that would have been a more likely route or would just
going to Mexico directly be more likely.

My father Abraham GLIKSON was born in Marijampole, Lithuania, and came to
Buenos Aires, Argentina >from Suwalki, Poland, where the family lived. He
was 16 or 17 years old when he came on his own, in 1924, on his way to the
US. He had been given enough money to spend a year in Buenos Aires. It was
known that visas here to reach the US were granted by the US Embassy after
approximately that time. He would join his mother's HOLLANDERSKY /
HOLLANDER / POKROISKY family there.

Approximately at the same time, regulations for immigration were modified
in the US. I've just made a quick look up for the info, and missed it.. but
quotas were reduced, and visas that took a year's wait now required ten
times as much.

So here I am, in Argentina in 2001, and suggesting Miriam that a reason for
an alternative Europe> Buenos Aires> Mexico> US route could have been more
favourable entry conditions after a wait in Mexico in 1925. Would a
knowledgeable JGenner have details on this?

Best wishes for a Happy and Peaceful Passover to all !
